Day 241: Joe Ann & Me – Classroom Door Painted

I arrived at school early today, but on my way–just a couple of miles from my house–the Georgia State Patrol stopped me and asked to see my license. Fortunately my new license had just arrived in the mail a few days ago. I had been able to renew for a second time over the web. It still has my young, thin photo. Both Julie and Joe Ann came to help me. Julie painted the door black. Joe Ann numbered and organized Mountain Language and teacher resource books. She also filled the gift bags for Open House on Friday.

I snapped this quick photo of us just before we went to the office and got my 0 gift card from Governor Sonny Purdue. We were both talking and smiling at the same time.

I drove to Valdosta to the dentist and got my teeth cleaned. Then I drove to Learning Tree and spent my 0 gift card using the Wish List that I’d made on their website. An employee zipped around the store, and I was "out of there" quicker than ever before.

Last I drove to U.S. Nails to get a French manicure. I’d planned on getting a pedicure too, but I didn’t want to wait. I’d called Jim,and he said that my "early" birthday gift (HP iPAQ hw6945) had arrived and supper was waiting for me.

Preened! Or something! Off to the races tomorrow. Had a spa pedicure today but they were too busy to do a manicure so I did one myself. Well I painted my fingernails at least! Also been for a spray tan. All for a few horses!

Year 4~Day 273 +244/365 AND Day 1369: Enjoying my 62nd Birthday Lunch

This morning I went to U.S. Nails for a pedicure. Then I drove over to the country club for lunch with Jim. He surprised me with a Reese’s birthday pie with lighted candle. Then I went back to U.S. Nails for a manicure. I drove home and changed into my workout clothes and drove to the fitness center. Billy’s BD present was a new exercise, the Walk Out.

It’s good be home and planning for our upcoming beach trip to continue celebrating my birthday.

Year 3~Day 356 +327/365 AND Day 1087: At Home with Flowers from Retirement Day

It was so nice to sleep in this Monday AM. Today and tomorrow are furlough days for me even though I have retired, and last Friday was my last day working. The students, teachers on my team, and parents surprised me with a lovely party. These flowers were from Nicole. Her mother and father were obviously instrumental in planning the party. Her father prayed a wonderful blessing over the food before the students could be served. Praise God!

I’ll be busy today. After breakfast I’m going to U.S. Nails for a pedicure and manicure. Then I’ll come back home and pack for our upcoming beach trip. Last Jim has asked me to follow him to the shop to get some parts replaced on his motorcycle. Everybody told me retirement was hectic. It has already begun.

I’m listening to "The Hallelujah Side."

Also on this day, I took some photo prints to Learning In Retirement, got a pedicure and manicure, attended Line Dance Class at the VLSCC, and attended Water Aerobics/Swim Lessons Class at VSU’s LIR. I fell asleep in my chair when I arrived home and ate a little supper.

Overall, Rocinha was much more organized than I thought it would be. To me, it seemed like just another community. People had television, there were internet cafes, hair salons where you could get manicures and pedicures, movie and dvd rental places and at one point they even had a McDonalds. Visiting the favela really opened my eyes past the myths of violence and unhappiness that are associated with slums and shanty towns. Although the people living here are poor, they had an entire community that had anything that they might need, and a lot of it for a lot cheaper than one would find outside the favela.

Floyd is now working at LeSalon. Today he shaped my hair with his "magic" comb and clippers.

Afterwards I went to U.S. Nails for a manicure and pedicure. Then I went shopping for some clothes and shoes for our Vegas trip.

This evening I packed my clothes. Tomorrow I will pack my camera equipment for the trip. Our flight leaves early Friday morning.
